COMMEMORATIVE GEOGRAPHIC NAMING

Geographic features were named for 6 of the 9 HMCS Kootenay crew who died in 1969. Naming of features for the 3 remaining crew are in progress in Alberta and Quebec.

 

July 10, 2018 Crabbe Island in Manitoba named for Kootenay Thomas Crabbe.

Crabbe Island is located in Goldsand Lake at 57° 06’ 19” latitude and 101° 11’ 31” longitude, approximately 30km north of north of Lynn Lake.

Sept. 26, 2018 Harman Lake in Manitoba named for Kootenay Eric Harman. Harman Lake is located at 57° 04’ 23” latitude / 101° 34’ 20” longitude approximately 45 kilometres north-west of Leaf Rapids.  Harman Lake is approximately 20 kilometres west of Crabbe Island.

Oct 23, 2019 Galloway Lake in Ontario named for Kootenay Nelson Murray Galloway. Location: District of Algoma, Township of Alanen. Certificate presented to sister Linda.

Oct 23, 2019 Hardy Lake in Ontario named for Kootenay Mike  Alan Hardy. Location: District of Algoma, Township of Alanen . Certificate presented to sister Debbie.

 

Oct 23, 2019 Stringer Lake in Ontario named for Kootenay Lewis John Stringer. Location: District of Algoma, Township of Alanen. Certificate presented to daughter Jacqueline.

 

Oct 22, 2022 Billy Boudreau Brook in Nova Scotia named for Kootenay William Boudreau. Certificate presented to sons Dana and Bill and other family members including Billy's sister Margaret.

Oct 23, 2019 PERRIER LAKE - Location: District of Algoma, Township of Bernst for Patrick Allen Perrier who died on October 18, 1965 at age 18 after a fire on HMCS Nipigon. Buried at sea near England.

 

Oct 23, 2019 PITT LAKE - Location: District of Algoma, Township: Bernst for Thomas Stewart Pitt who died on October 23, 1965 at age 23 after a fire on HMCS Nipigon. Buried at Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey UK.

 

Oct 23, 2019 RODDY READE RIVER (Nappan River, Brookdale area, Amherst, Cumberland Co. NS) for Roderick Eric Reade who died on October 23, 1965 at age 23 after a fire on HMCS Nipigon. Buried at Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey UK.
